There’s an old African Proverb that says, ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ and we believe that never has that been so important!
As we emerge from the challenge of Covid, we recognise that the mental health and wellbeing of our children and parents has been tested like never before. Referrals into both Child First Trust and Mid Tendring Education Partnership have increased year on year for the last 5 years – as has the complexity of the challenges we face as parents and families. In particular we have seen a significant rise in the number of families affected by domestic abuse – in its many forms. The Listening Hub was inspired and developed as a direct result of the feedback shared by survivors many of whom explained that they would have sought help sooner if they’d known ‘what was out there’. Made possible by The Churchill Fellowship, the Listening Hub aims to bring the incredible services co-ordinated by SETDAB (Southend, Essex and Thurrock Domestic Abuse Board) directly to your fingertips – accessible via a safe, school website.
The Listening Hub is a pilot project that has been designed to support parents and carers in a safe and practical way. Directly linked from your child’s school, the site aims to raise awareness of the services available to you and empowering you to access these. It is primarily a safe space for parents to seek and access support with Domestic Abuse, helping us to recognise what it is and the help that is available to you. Additionally, you will find a growing number of pages that give advice on other areas of challenge such as SEN, health, anxiety, debt management and parenting. This hub is directly linked from your child’s school and, depending on the school your child attends, there may well be additional services available to help you.
The Listening Hub also provides a ‘home’ for the SENCOs within our schools. Your child’s school will have its own SENCO (Special Needs Coordinator) and they work incredibly hard to support your children – and we recognise that a strong family unit is so important to helping our children thrive. The Listening Hub is a place where they too can share resources and links that will, in turn, help you and your children.
By working in partnership with over 40 schools in North East Essex and Tendring we aim provide an accessible and helpful platform that enables you to access the support you need. A bridge to the many services available and, if needed, a helping hand, to reach them.
We recognise that the issues many of you face are not easy to talk about. That it can take real courage to reach out and ask for help. We take your safety seriously.
With over 43 different languages spoken as first languages by the parents in our schools so it was important that this site is accessible to you all. Please select the language of your choice.

Domestic abuse can happen to anyone, regardless of age, social background, gender, religion, sexuality or ethnicity.
The majority of victims of domestic abuse are women but it can happen to men too. The abuse can be physical, emotional, psychological, financial or sexual. Everyone has arguments and may disagree with their partners, family members and others close to them from time to time, however anyone forced to alter their behaviour because they are frightened of their partner’s or family member’s reaction is being abused.
It can begin at any stage of the relationship. Domestic abuse is rarely a one-off. Incidents generally become more frequent and severe over time.
